Strap in. This one is utterly delicious.
A classic Colombian coffee that will have you going back for cup after cup. Jammy berries, brown sugar and dark chocolate, silky smooth from first sip to last. Medium roast, works brilliantly as both espresso and filter. And it's grown by ASMUCAFE, Asociación de Mujeres Agropecuarias de Uribe, an association of women farmers and landowners in El Tambo, Cauca. Their mission is straightforward: improve their families' quality of life through coffee farming and contribute positively to their community by working together and sharing resources, knowledge and support.
The coffee, all Castillo or Colombia variety, goes through a double fermentation process. Cherries sit in loading hoppers for 14 hours, then are depulped in the afternoons and placed into open fermentation tanks for another 10 hours. After that they are washed three to four times before drying in parabolic dryers or in the sun for 8 to 12 days.
What Makes ASMUCAFE Special? Beyond being delicious, a special price premium is added to this coffee specifically for projects chosen by the women of the association themselves. The Women Coffee Producers project was established to highlight associations of women producers globally and address the widespread wage inequity women face in coffee, adding a gender equity premium on top of the base price, paid directly to the growers to use however they choose. That matters to us a lot.
Colombia is best known for its washed coffees and ASMUCAFE is a classic example of why. Picked ripe, depulped the same day, fermented in open air tanks, washed clean and dried on patios or in parabolic dryers.
Cauca sits in central western Colombia, stretching from the Western Cordillera mountain range to the Pacific Ocean. Ocean winds and high elevation make it one of the coolest regions in the country, producing some of its most distinctive coffees.
We have worked with ASMUCAFE before and we will keep working with them. The coffee is ridiculously tasty and the values behind it align completely with ours.
The women of ASMUCAFE put it best themselves: "Our work is determined by our values such as responsibility, honesty, commitment, respect, solidarity, and competitiveness."
Not much else to say. Grab a bag before it's gone.
