We’re so excited by this incredible coffee for many reasons, firstly it’s stupidly delicious. As a filter, it's warming, juicy and bursting with fruit, whilst espresso brings out a more chewy side with plenty of caramel sweetness and bold cherry. Served over ice you will find it seriously moreish, trust us you'll keep going back to for another sip.
Marawaka sits deep in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Remote doesn't quite cover it. Steep mountain ranges, dense rainforest and very little infrastructure have kept it largely isolated and traditional farming practices completely intact. This coffee is grown by a small group of female smallholder farmers in garden plots alongside subsistence crops at between 1800 and 2500 metres. Arabica, washed, hand picked.
During harvest season, families move through their gardens together picking ripe red cherries by hand. The cherries are brought back to the village, pulped using smooth stones and washed in cold mountain rivers fed by rainfall and forest streams. Then spread out to dry.
And what a journey it is! From Marawaka the coffee travels through mountainous terrain to Goroka for processing, then on to Lae for export. Heavy seasonal rains, difficult roads and challenging infrastructure mean timing is never guaranteed. That it makes it to your cup at all is genuinely something.
Enjoy a fruity little number from Papua New Guinea. This one is all about bold raspberry flavours and juicy black cherry notes, balanced with a sweet hit of caramel running through the cup. A medium roast keeps this one bright and sweet, letting those bold fruit and syrupy caramel flavours shine.
For communities like Marawaka, the future depends on better infrastructure and stronger relationships with international buyers.
The goal is straightforward. A reliable pathway between these farmers and the people drinking their coffee, one that respects and preserves everything that makes this place and this coffee what it is.
We are really proud to be stocking it. Go try it before it runs out.
