Why Buying from Women Changes Everything

When women are paid fairly, incredible things happen. Or rather, the things that should have been happening all along finally start to take shape. At Girls Who Grind Coffee, our mission isn't just about a great brew; it’s about correcting a historical imbalance, one cup at a time.

Last year, I stepped out from the roastery to run our stall at the Bath Christmas Market. Being face-to-face with customers for 18 days was a joy, but it was also a stark reminder of how much work we still have to do. While most people love what we do, I’m still met with the occasional scoff or look of genuine confusion. One man stopped, rolled his eyes, and asked, "Why the hell do I need to know the coffee is grown by women? What difference does that even make?" I didn't let him walk away; I called him over to explain exactly why it matters.

The reality is that the playing field isn't level. Across the globe, women face systemic barriers to education, land ownership, and financial resources. This isn't just a "difference"—it’s inequity. In the coffee industry, men have historically held the keys to market access and technical knowledge. By specifically seeking out and buying from women farmers, we aren't just being "nice"; we are actively dismantling those barriers and providing the support needed to bridge that gap.

The ripple effect of this choice is profound. Research consistently shows that when women control their own finances and businesses, they reinvest up to 90% of their income back into their families and communities. They prioritise healthcare, education, and local infrastructure, effectively lifting entire villages  out of poverty. When you buy from a woman, you aren't just supporting an individual; you are investing in a stronger, more resilient future for everyone.

As International Women’s Day approaches, we see a huge surge in support at GWGC, and we are incredibly grateful for it. But my hope is that this awareness doesn't expire at midnight on March 8th. We need to rethink our purchasing habits every single day of the year. Whether it’s coffee, tech, or textiles, choosing to buy from women-led businesses is one of the most direct ways you can advocate for global equity. Let’s make "buying from women" a daily standard, not just a once-a-year celebration.
